NOW OPEN – Octopus Ventures Knowledge Intensive EIS Fund
But contrary to what you might think, this may well be the best period in over a decade to invest in venture capital.
Some of the best-known businesses backed by venture capital were formed in the doom and gloom of uncertain periods. Zoopla (a former Octopus Ventures portfolio company), Uber, and Airbnb all flourished in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.
Why?
In periods of recession, we see better availability of talent and incumbents cutting investment in innovation, creating opportunities for new start-ups.
With compelling growth opportunities in the market, the Octopus Ventures Knowledge Intensive Fund is now open for investment.
The fund is an extension of the evergreen Octopus Ventures EIS Service and invests in a portfolio of early-stage, EIS-qualifying, Knowledge Intensive companies with high growth potential.
Last year it filled within eight weeks, so get your client’s applications in early to avoid disappointment.
As an EIS Knowledge Intensive fund, income tax relief is available in the tax year the fund closes (2022/23), no matter when the money is deployed. Investors can choose to carry back income tax relief to 2021/22, either to create a rebate or to allow planning to be done as part of their self-assessment. This means the fund is a final chance to carry back income tax relief to last tax year.
The fund has a capacity of £40 million and will close on 5 April 2023, or when capacity is reached, whichever comes first.

Key risks to keep in mind:
- The value of an investment, and any income from it, can fall as well as rise. Investors may not get back the full amount they invest.
- Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and tax rules may change in the future.
- Tax relief depends on portfolio companies maintaining their qualifying status.
- EIS investments are by their nature high risk, their share price may be volatile and they may be hard to sell.
